Hip arthritis can cause severe pain and limit daily activities, affecting overall quality of life. When other treatments don’t work, surgery might be the best option.
A total hip replacement is a common surgery that replaces damaged parts of the hip with artificial ones, reducing pain and improving mobility. Traditionally, this surgery has been done through the back of the hip (posterior approach), which requires cutting and reattaching muscles. This can slow down recovery and increase the risk of the new hip dislocating if certain movements aren’t avoided.
At Huntington Orthopedics, we use a more advanced method called the Direct Anterior Approach. This approach allows us to access the hip from the front, meaning we don’t have to cut any muscles. By keeping the muscles intact, patients recover faster and face fewer risks.
Benefits of the Anterior Approach:
- Faster recovery: Most patients can walk on the same day and go home within 24 hours.
- Reduced risk of dislocation: Since no muscles are cut, there’s a lower chance of the new hip slipping out of place.
- Smaller incision: The cut is usually about 5-6 inches, compared to 12-18 inches with the traditional approach.
- Customized surgery: We use advanced computer software and real-time x-rays to ensure the perfect fit and position of the hip implants.
Most patients are able to stop using walkers or canes within 4 weeks or less.
This approach has proven to be highly successful, with over 20 years of experience and a 95% success rate in restoring function and improving quality of life for our patients.
